End 2013Shah takes the finance seat at Ola. Twelve years as CFO of a textile company, an IPO led at 28 and work on the Being Human clothing story had pulled him towards the internet economy when a connection to Ola's founder made the introduction. He stayed three years.
2014The first angel cheque. It went into a former colleague's peer-to-peer lending idea that mainstream investors would not touch, and it came with connects, guidance and governance attached. His rule since: capital is about 25% of a founder's problem, execution the other 75%.
2018-19IPV starts as a weekend project. Bootstrapped by co-founders who kept their full-time jobs, on the reading that the one-in-ten survival rate of early-stage investing is a process failure rather than a law. The membership was about 50 friends.
2019-20Fifty members become 700, and everyone goes full-time. A year of that growth was enough validation on both sides of the platform, investors and founders, for the co-founders to leave their jobs around the time Covid arrived.
2022-24The funding winter, which he refuses to call one. Shah says the phrase was coined by investors to get better entry prices, and that IPV kept writing cheques through the two years it was supposedly at its worst. Green shoots in the last two quarters, by his count.
2024Five years in, two AIFs and $100 million out. More than 200 companies funded through two SEBI-registered vehicles, a base past 14,000 investors across more than 55 countries, and close to 40 exits from 190-plus investments, about 13 of them full exits through M&A.
TodayNew machinery at both ends of the pipe. Idea School replaces the friends-and-family round with $100K for 8%, five startups a batch and two batches a year, while FIS Capital, the Series A and B fund raised in India, has announced a first close near $12 million with one investment made and two closing. Final close about a year out, and the fund is being kept small on purpose.
2020sHe calls the decade for startups. The bet rests on domestic consumption in a country of 140 crore people, internet penetration approaching 900 million and smartphones past 500 million, plus his own decade of angel cheques from 2014 to now.
